EXCERPT
Former members of the Mongrel Mob, Black Power and other biker gangs will wear patches declaring their love for Jesus at a national meeting of converted gangsters in Palmerston North this weekend.
Between 150 and 200 people are expected to attend the annual conference of the Outcast Ministries New Zealand, which consists of groups of ex-gangsters who have converted to Christianity. The Labour weekend event includes a powhiri, a hui and concerts in The Square and Life Church.
Men wearing patches in The Square might be intimidating to some people, but event organiser Michael Ngatoro, a former Mongrel Mob member, said the public had nothing to worry about.
``It think it will be the safest place in town,'' he said. ``We are all ex-gang members who have turned our lives around. These guys come from some out-of-it backgrounds, from the Mongrel Mob, Black Power, bikies and even White Power.''
